What is a Career Community? October – Sport & Business Career Community Month.

Career Communities

Do you want your academic interests to align with your career interests? Join the Career Community which best fits your interests!

A Career Community brings together students having similar career interests which fit a particular occupational category. Career communities help students navigate the process of career development and develop essential skills tailored to their Career Community.  At the School of Public Health, there are five main Career Communities:

Joining a Career Community. Visit the homepage of the Office of Career Services where you can create a profile for yourself and select your preferences in addition to monthly or weekly alerts regarding career topics and events. If you are unsure of which Career Community fits your profile, you can choose multiple ones so that you can have access to different sources. For instance, as a doctoral candidate in Health Behavior, I chose the ‘Public Health & Safety’ Career Community but I am also interested in ‘Fitness & Wellness’, and ‘Youth & Social Services’. I am very interested in events, programs and articles related to these other two Career Communities. This is a good example for someone of a cross-disciplinary background as well!

Benefits of Joining a Career Community.

  • Get updated weekly or monthly on events, programs, career fairs and blog articles related to your Career Community
  • Meet with a Career Coach who will help you map out your career development process
  • Opportunity to get engaged in specialized services, programs, and events customized to your career interests

You can find more information on each of the five career communities here.

October is the month of ‘Sport & Business’ Career Community. This month, students in the Sport and Business field will be having numerous opportunities to be involved in programs and events tailored to meet their career needs. For example, there will be a Group Coaching event for careers in Sport & Business on October 4, 2017 in PH C100 from 10am to 12pm. Find out more on our events page.

Sport & Business Career Community. The Sport & Business Career Community is for students pursuing careers on business processes of sport including marketing, sales, management, communications and media, operations, business and legal aspects. While graduates in this community develop the necessary skills to work in their fields, they also acquire other essential skills such as team work, conflict resolution, and communication skills. Many graduates go on to work as Sales Executive, Event Coordinator, Account Executive at some of these organizations such as Adidas Group, Chicago Bulls, Yelp, Indianapolis Colts among others. You can see a more detailed list of employers which have hired graduates in the past here.

If you have not yet set up your preferences for which Career Community you want to be associated with, we strongly advise you to do so. If you are unsure, sign up for meetings with one of our career coaches at the Office of Career Services.
