SUMMARY:Public Health Competency Development Series- Current Issues in Public Health Policy
DESCRIPTION:
The 2021 Public Health Competency Development Series, presented by the Office of Public Health Practice and the Office of Career Services will continue with Part 2 on January 25th from 12-1pm. This annual continuing education series incorporates direct feedback from SPH-B graduates on desired areas of additional training. Each event will focus on sharpening skills for a specific component of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals.
In the January installment of this series, panelist and experts’ discussion will focus on the policy development process and the role of various stakeholders from evidence to enforcement; challenges and barriers to policy enforcement; and current issues in public health policy. Speaker Bios:
Ryan Jackson, MPH
As a 2015 graduate of the Indiana University Master of Public Health Program, Ryan has been employed with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) since October 2015. His career began with CDC as a member of the Public Health Associates Program (PHAP), where he was stationed at the Pennsylvania Department of Health in Harrisburg, PA. While in the PHAP program he served the Pennsylvania Department of Health in multiple capacities including the Bureau of Public Health Preparedness, Epidemiology, Health promotion and Risk Reduction.
Following his transition to CDC’s Office of Appropriations in 2017, he has served in several roles. For the last three years Ryan has served as the account manager for the National Center for Environmental Health, and The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. In this role he oversees congressional relations and the budget formulation process for the multimillion-dollar portfolio. He also plays an essential role in the coordination of congressional briefings, and in person VIP visits to CDC campuses. Most recently Ryan has served as the Policy Team Lead for the Chief Health Equity Officer in CDC’s COVID-19 response. In this position Ryan oversaw and addressed policy needs, and congressional relations related to health equity within the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Before beginning at CDC, Mr. Jackson completed policy work for the Indiana Minority Health coalition in Indianapolis, Indiana. In this role he assisted with creating and lobbying for legislation which would legalize syringe exchange programs during Indiana’s largest HIV outbreak. Prior to beginning the MPH program at Indiana University, Ryan also spent time working on the public health portfolio for U.S. Congressman Adriano Espaillat (D-NY).
A native of Cleveland, Ohio Ryan received his undergraduate degree in 2012 from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. He enjoys traveling, and spending time with family and friends, as well as Cleveland, U of M, and IU sports.
Heydi Correa-Encarnación, MPH
Heydi Correa-Encarnación is a 21st Century Scholar and received her B.A. in Sociology & Spanish from Indiana University-Bloomington in 2010. While pursuing her B.A., she also minored in Latino Studies and Public Health. She returned to the IU School of Public and completed her M.P.H. in Behavioral, Social, and Community Health.
Heydi was exposed to various aspects of the health care industry from an early age. As a scholar and public health practitioner, she has focused her efforts on health prevention and promotion initiatives for underserved Latino communities in Indiana, particularly through state health care systems and grassroots organizations.
Heydi has worked with La Casa, the City of Bloomington, Monroe County Community School Corporation ESL programs, and El Centro Comunal Latino. In 2012, she became the only bilingual HIV health educator in Southern Indiana through the IU Health Bienestar Latino Project, serving a total of seven counties in providing HIV education, testing and counseling. She also served on the advisory board of Bienestar, and was a board member for El Centro Comunal Latino and a health needs assessment researcher for Monroe County.
In 2015, Heydi was selected as a Health Graduate Fellow with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute in Washington, D.C. She worked in the U.S. House of Representatives with the Honorable Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico on issues of behavioral health, veteran health and elderly care. She has also worked with the American Public Health Association, where she assisted in public health research, ongoing advocacy efforts, coalition building and the development of fact sheets, action alerts and other advocacy materials to address APHA priority areas.
Currently, she is a trainer and consultant with Anthem Indiana Medicaid through Briljent, LLC at the Anthem headquarters in Indianapolis. As the general trainer for Anthem Indiana Medicaid, She supplies Anthem Indiana Medicaid Associates with differing levels of technological and educational skills instructional trainings (team, virtual, and in-person) on ever-changing federal and state-based Medicaid policy updates and implementations. She manages, creates, organizes and executes all trainings requested and needed by the client targeting over 200 Anthem Indiana Medicaid Associates.
Wyatt Beckman, MPH
Wyatt J. Beckman, M.P.H., C.H.E.S., Analyst, provides research and technical support related to our work on population health. He has contributed to our studies on social isolation, e-cigarettes, telehealth, prescription drugs, and the response of local governments to COVID-19. He also provides research support to the Center for Sharing Public Health Services, a national initiative managed by KHI and funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation which focuses on cross-jurisdictional sharing as a strategy to improve public health effectiveness and efficiency.
Prior to joining KHI, Wyatt was a research assistant at the Indiana University Public Policy Institute, where he performed a variety of applied research and evaluation efforts, with a focus on food insecurity, housing instability and bias crime policies.
Born and raised in rural Western Kansas, Wyatt earned a master’s degree in public health from Indiana University, where he focused on behavioral, social and community health and also on public health administration. He received a bachelor’s degree in health science from Truman State University. Wyatt is a certified health education specialist.
