About: This program, Health and Wellness Tourism: The Case of Barcelona, Spain focuses on the role of Health & Wellness Tourism in Spain. Students will explore and understand why tourists travel for the purpose of health and well-being. This course will look at the seven unique areas of wellness including physical, psychological, and spiritual activities. This course will investigate the global and financial impact of wellness tourism including its contribution to the tourism industry and how it is driving the industry to recognize the importance of wellness not only for tourists but for employees as well. This class will provide an opportunity for students to engage in wellness activities outside the classroom that will enhance the understanding of how to encourage and promote wellness in the tourism industry.

Program is open to any Indiana University undergraduate.  Having some knowledge or understanding of health and wellness design, medical tourism, or tourism is encouraged, but not required.  Applicants should have at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA.

Program Eligibility:

You may apply if you:

  • are an undergraduate or graduate student at the School of Public Health – Bloomington who is making normal academic progress
  • are in at least your fourth full-time semester of college
  • have approximately a 2.75 cumulative GPA
  • knowledge or understanding of public health concepts is encouraged, but not required.
  • consent to follow the School of Public Health’s COVID mitigation plan
  • complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria are outlined with the Academic Policies and Procedures of the Office of Overseas Study.  Selection is based on maturity, seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between program and applicant.  Students on disciplinary probation during program period are ineligible
Costs and Financial Aid:

  • Program fee: $4010 (excluding airfare). Program fee covers insurance, lodging, transportation, some meals, and some excursions.
  • Explore a list of study abroad scholarships offered through the Office of Overseas Study, other IU units, partner institutions, and national organizations.

*Students admitted in an SPH faculty-led program are required to enroll in the one credit hour course SPH-X223 Introduction to Study Abroad in Public Health.  Students will enroll in this course during the  first 8-week session of the summer 2023.  This course is 100% online and meets asynchronously.
