Mission

Meet the nation’s ongoing need for applied epidemiology workforce capacity in state and local health departments through a national fellowship-training program.

About Us

Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) established the Applied Epidemiology Fellowship (AEF) which is closely designed after the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) program and using a mentorship model to train recent graduates in the expanding field of applied epidemiology. Participating fellows will receive two years of on-the-job training at a state or local health department under the guidance of two experienced mentors.

About the Fellowship

CSTE’s Applied Epidemiology Fellowship (AEF) graduates use their knowledge obtained during their fellowship and post fellowship in various CSTE programs such as DSTT and LEAD to provide mentorship and leadership to future fellows and to the CSTE Executive Board. Over 65% of the graduates in the 2022 cohort remain and provide capacity in State, Territorial, Local, and Tribal health department epidemiologist positions and the majority of the program’s graduates stayed in public health. AEF just celebrated 20 years in operation with its 20th class of fellows in 2022 which demonstrates it is training the future leaders of applied public health.
