Public Health AmeriCorps Member Position Description
Purpose of Position/Summary: The Indiana Department of Health is hiring AmeriCorps members to fill part-time or full-time positions serving in local health departments to increase capacity and enhance the implementation of best practices and core public health services. These are entry-level positions and a great opportunity for individuals to gain invaluable experience in the public health field. This is a professional development program with an emphasis on advancing AmeriCorps members’ skills. Members will be supported by an AmeriCorps Program Manager in addition to a site supervisor at the local health department where they’re serving.
AmeriCorps and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention joined forces to launch Public Health AmeriCorps and support the recruitment, training, and development of the next generation of public health leaders who will be ready to respond to the nation’s public health needs. This position will help in the implementation of strategies for addressing the public health needs of local communities by providing support in local public health settings and advancing more equitable health outcomes for underserved communities. This position will also be tasked with creating mechanisms to support pathways to good quality public health-related careers through onsite experience and training. Placements of AmeriCorps members will reflect the communities in which they will serve. The AmeriCorps Members will help to implement initiatives related to Public Health Infrastructure for the Office of Performance Excellence.
Service Schedule: There are multiple options for serving with Public Health AmeriCorps. Options are included below with service weeks between 15 – 40 hours/week over a period of time.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
· Formulate and interpret all policies and procedures related to a public health program.
· Develop public health program plans relative to assigned program area, implement changes, and evaluates effectiveness of on-going programs.
· Maintain management information systems related to program area identifying computerization needs and expansion recommendations.
· Participate in and/or coordinates grant writing efforts
· Serve as primary agency liaison regarding public health program area, working closely with associated federal, state, and local agencies and partners to ensure that program objectives are modified and updated as needs dictate.
· Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees.
· Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures of the Public Health AmeriCorps Program.

Position Requirements:
• Broad knowledge of public health theories, principles, practices, and strategies.
• Broad knowledge of program area including current and changing state and federal laws.
• Considerable knowledge of the organization and function of state and local health agencies.
• Specialized knowledge of public health laws governing state and local health jurisdictions.
• Specialized knowledge of program planning and implementation techniques.
• Ability to communicate complex public health theories and principles both orally and in writing.
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Access.
• Ability to coordinate and maintain effective working relationships with other local, state, and federal agency staff.
• Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.
• Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
Additional Requirements:
· Minimum Age: 21 · A high school diploma or its equivalent
· AmeriCorps is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent resident aliens. Age restrictions vary by program
· Clean criminal record and driving background – all members must pass a background check
· Reliable vehicle, car insurance & driver’s license strongly recommended
· Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
Personal Work Relationships: This individual will be expected to partner with agency personnel and related stakeholders working towards completion of assigned functions. Exceptional customer service is provided to agency partners and/or the public. Partnership with relevant public agencies, federal, state & local governments and/or community leaders may be required.
Physical Effort: This role performs work in an environment where sitting for extended periods of time could be expected.
Working Conditions: This role performs work in a standard office environment. However, some travel may be required. Travel and logistics will be communicated in advance.
