NeuroHope is a rehab, fitness and wellness facility that offers affordable, long term care to individuals following a neurologic injury or condition by utilizing activity based therapy.
Purpose
Interns will learn about neurologic diagnoses, gain firsthand experience, and apply their skills either in both group class settings and 1-on-1 with clients. They will also assist staff members with equipment setup as well as the implementation of exercises to ensure all safety measures are being met for a positive outcome for the client. The degree of independence allowed to each student intern will be determined by his/her skills and abilities, as determined by the intern coordinator. They will participate in operational components within the department, undergo periodic evaluations for professional development, and complete a quality improvement or research-based project followed by a presentation to the staff. Students who complete this internship should obtain a more notable insight and understanding of the role of a fitness professional working with individuals who have neurologic conditions.
Duties and Responsibilities
Includes but are not limited to:
- Assisting staff members with prep, equipment setup, and patient guidance (hands on assistance) during sessions and fitness classes
- Providing assistance to staff members to ensure all necessary safety measures are being met to ensure a secure and compliant environment for the clients
- Creating exercise plans in both group fitness classes and 1-on-1 sessions
- Assisting staff members during aquatic exercise sessions
- Stocking and maintaining inventory of therapy equipment and clinic supplies
- Maintaining work areas, ensuring a clean and organized workspace for staff members and clients
- Managing and operating equipment safely and correctly as well as providing instruction to patients/clients regarding appropriate use of equipment
Professional Requirements
Includes but are not limited to:
- Adhering to company dress code
- Maintaining patient confidentiality following HIPAA guidelines
- Maintaining state, federal, and local regulatory requirements
- Representing the organization in a positive, professional manner
- Completing work assignments accurately and in a timely manner
- Demonstrating the ability to communicate effectively; both orally and in writing
- Treating clients and their families with respect
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an exercise-based collegiate-level program
- Interested in the field of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, or Exercise Science
Working Conditions
- Outpatient physical therapy and wellness clinic setting
- Standard business hours Monday – Friday 9AM to 5PM
- Possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and other communicable diseases
- Familiarization of rehabilitation tools / equipment that includes but is not limited to: aquatic exercise, body weight support harness systems, and accessible resistance/cardio equipment
Physical Demands
- Able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
- Ability to maintain proper body mechanics while lifting and assisting with clients of all body types and levels of dependence
