Objective: The Recreation Therapist (RT) provides direct supports to clients designed to
improve their physical, cognitive, and social functioning. The RT utilizes recreation and
other activity-based interventions to address the assessed needs of people with the goal of
obtaining greater participation in life in the community. Activities include organizing
and directing adapted sports, dramatics, arts and crafts, social activities, and other
recreation supports. This position is directly supervised by the Milestones Associate
Director or designate.
Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Maintains professional conduct at all times.
a. Presents with a positive attitude in all daily relations with clients, staff, team
members and members of the general public.
b. Maintains open and honest communication while performing duties.
c. Knows, upholds and supports the policies, procedures, and philosophy of
Stone Belt.
d. Prepares and provides information as needed for client meetings.
e. Participates as an active member of all assigned Stone Belt and community
teams and meetings.
f. Fosters intra-agency communication and collaboration and cooperates with
other services providers.
g. Assumes responsibility and accountability for own decisions and actions.
h. Serves as a role model for clients and co-workers.
2. Prepares and maintains written case records, reports and forms, performs case followup and closing, and performs other administrative tasks as required.
a. Knows and follows the “RETH” Medicaid Waiver requirements for
reimbursable activities, service standards, and documentation standards.
b. Completes and submits clinical notes within Stone Belt’s Empower system.
c. Responds to all audits of work product in a timely manner.
3. Provides Recreation Therapy (RETH) services to designated clients as assigned. In
general, these are clients for whom Stone Belt has an active “Notice of Action”
(NOA).
a. Assesses and evaluates the needs of clients and prepares and implements
treatment plans based on that assessment.
b. Works directly with clients to implement treatment plans as written.
c. Organizes and conducts Recreation Therapy groups for clients when
applicable.

d. Works closely with families of clients and provides appropriate
communication to facilitate a positive therapeutic relationship.
e. Maintains working relationships with the staff of clients.
f. Establishes rapport with assigned clients and provides person-centered
services consistent with the individual’s desires/needs as defined in the
individual support plan.
g. Provides consultation to staff on specific cases involving coordination of
care
h. When appropriate, transports clients to various community destinations.
i. Completes all clinical documentation – including treatment notes, quarterly
reports, etc. – as required by regulation or assigned by supervisor.
j. Relates all pertinent information concerning clients’ health, behavior,
program, etc. to appropriate parties which may include agency and school
personnel, parents, and family members, following all confidentiality and
HIPAA guidelines.
4. Maintains knowledge of client rights and protects those rights in all situations and at
all times.
a. Adheres to policies related to boundaries with clients and attends required
abuse risk management training.
b. Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and follows all mandated
abuse reporting requirements.
c. Adheres to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and
supervising clients.
5. Enhances clients’ ability to lead self-determined lives.
a. Provides the support and information necessary to build clients’ self-esteem
and assertiveness.
b. Encourages clients to do things for themselves to retain feelings of
independence and self-esteem.
c. Provides opportunities for clients to be self-directed by increasing awareness
of self-advocacy methods and techniques.
d. Encourages and assists clients to speak on their own behalf and provides
information on peer support and self-advocacy groups.
e. Proactively facilitates and supports clients in the development of friendships
and other relationships.
6. In addition to clinical record keeping, completes other documentation required by
Stone Belt agency policies.
7. Maintains certification in CPR/First Aid and attends other staff training as required by
state and agency regulations.
8. Completes other duties as assigned by supervisor.

1. Works a flexible schedule as assigned in abroad variety of settings, including
residential, day, and workshop programs as well as community locations, such as at a
family home or local business.
2. Must be willing to work beyond scheduled hours during emergency and/or bad
weather conditions.
3. Transports clients as needed in agency and/or personal vehicle.
4. Car availability may be required for some positions. Must maintain vehicle insurance
for personal vehicle used for work purposes.
5. Must immediately report to Human Resources any change in driving or criminal
record.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Therapy. Master’s degree in human services field is
preferred for supervisory RETH staff.
2. Possession of a valid United States driver’s license and eligibility for coverage with
agency’s insurer. Must be able to travel independently on a daily basis.
3. Must be able to physically provide recreation supports.
4. Ability to pass all Stone Belt core training classes and skills tests.
5. Exceptional communication skills (oral and written) required. Ability to actively
listen, build trust and adapt communication style and tactics to fit the audience.

6. Ability to make immediate sound decisions when faced with difficult situations.

required.
10. Must possess strong computer skills including experience with internet, Word, and
Excel.
11. Must hold and maintain the national council for therapeutic recreation certification as
required by regulation.
