IU Alumnus, Mick Dell’Orco, Shares Career Advice (Article by Teamwork Online)

Mick Dell’Orco, Group Sales Account Executive, Houston Astros

Houston, TX – Michael “Mick” Dell’Orco is a Group Sales Account Executive at the Houston Astros. Mick was hired after he graduated in 2013. Mick believes that being able to tell a compelling story about your successes to potential employers helped him get hired and will help you too.

Mick was captain of Indiana University’s Men’s Diving Team. He’s a four year letter winner. He spent a lot of time training, supervising and supporting team members in this precision sport. He also served on the student athlete advisory board on behalf of the men’s swim team.

Mick was an NCAA Division I First Team All-American and a 2012 Qualifier for the Olympic Diving Trials. Yet in between the grueling work of nearly being a full time athlete, Mick found time to serve as a marketing intern for the athletic department working in game day operations, in-game promotions and supporting the various television networks coming to campus. He also sold some tickets to alumni and built a fan email database. In the summers he was a head camp counselor at the Indiana Diving Academy.

So, here was a varsity, D1 student-athlete, who near Olympic caliber, found time to study and gain extracurricular activities that made it easier for him to be hired once he graduated. Mick’s work ethic created a great story to tell.
